Description:
A smallish dark sandpiper browner, with coarser marks above, a long prominent pale supercilium. Adult breeding has heavily streaked breast and barred flanks; upperparts barred and spotted pale grey-brown and white. Adult non-breeding has more uniform grey-brown upperparts, spotted whitish, and breast brownish and lightly streaked.
Distribution:
Common passage migrant through south-western parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Usually found in wide variety of wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, boggy areas and grasslands. From lowlands up to 3500m during passage migration.
Behavior:
Gleans, pecks, probes or sweeps bill through water; also able to catch flying insects from air. Mainly detects prey visually. Feeds in shallow water or on mud; occasionally swims. On breeding grounds chiefly takes small, especially aquatic insects. Elsewhere, aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, worms, spiders, crustaceans, molluscs, small fish and tadpoles; sometimes seeds.
